Visiting Concord, New Hampshire

Festivals, Museums, & the NH State House

New Hampshire State House

New Hampshire State House

New Hampshire’s capital city, Concord is a lively town full of well-known schools, museums, and festivals. Visitors are welcome to attend the Granite State Symphony Orchestra, explore the historic Phenix Hall, or swing by Beaver Meadow Golf Course – the state’s oldest golf course.

For a real treat, be sure to visit the nation’s oldest State House in which legislature still occupies the original chambers. Finished in 1819 by architect Stuart Park, the Greek Revival style New Hampshire State House is a must-see during your time in Concord.

The state house is home to the Governor, Executive Council, and New Hampshire General Court – plus the House Chamber, Senate Chamber, and Doric Hall, or Hall of Flags.

Stop by the State House Visitors Center – open throughout the year for self-guided tours Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Visitors are also welcome to explore the nearly three acres of grounds, which double as a show floor for historic statues of Daniel Webster, John P. Hale, General John Stark, and more.

Traveling with children? Be sure to visit the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center – an air and space museum home to a replica of a Mercury-Redstone rocket in the onsite Redstone Rocket Plaza. Grab a seat in the Christa McAuliffe Planetarium, head up to the rooftop observatory, or enjoy lunch in the Countdown Café. Exhibits include “Marvin – the Martian Rover” and “Mercury Capsule” and “Walk on the Sun.”

Visit the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center from Thursday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. – plus Friday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Visiting during the summer? The center is open daily starting in mid-June from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. – Friday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

For the film buff, don’t miss the annual SNOB Film Festival – meaning Somewhat North Of Boston Film Festival. Established in 2002, the festival takes place in downtown Concord at Red River Theatres. Catch independent films in this independent theater each November.

Museums, movies, and New Hampshire State House – there’s never a dull moment in Concord.
